How to Control Who Can See a Facebook Video

How to Control Who Can See a Facebook Video

Before posting a video on Facebook, it is worth checking who will be able to watch it. A video shared with friends has a different audience from one set to public, and options can vary depending on whether you post to a personal profile, a Page, a group, or another Facebook feature. Knowing where to find the audience controls helps you make an informed choice before you publish.

These settings control access to a Facebook post or video; they do not make the video impossible to copy or share outside its original context. Facebook’s menus and available options can also change, so treat the labels shown in your account as the current guide.

Start with the place where you are posting

Facebook does not have one universal audience switch for every video. The visibility choices depend partly on the publishing surface. A personal profile post, a Page post, and a post in a group are governed by different settings and rules.

Personal profile posts

When composing a post from a personal profile, look for the audience selector near your name or post controls. It may show a choice such as Public, Friends, or a custom audience. The selector usually applies to that post, including a video attached to it. Check it before publishing rather than assuming Facebook will use the audience you intended.

Depending on your account and the feature you are using, you may also see options for friends except certain people, selected friends, or a list you created. Read the option carefully: selecting a narrower audience can exclude people who might otherwise see your profile posts, but it does not change the visibility of every item on your profile.

Pages and groups

Content posted from a Facebook Page is generally intended for a Page’s audience, and Page posts may be public. A Page is not the same as a personal profile’s Friends audience. If you manage a Page, check the post preview and any audience or restriction controls available to you before publishing, especially if the video is meant for a limited community.

In a group, visibility depends on the group’s privacy and its membership rules. A post in a private group is not equivalent to a public profile post, but group membership can change, and members may still be able to share or record what they can view. Check the group’s current privacy description and posting options instead of relying on assumptions based on its name.

Choose an audience before you publish

Use this simple review before posting a video from your profile:

  1. Open the post composer and attach or select your video.

  2. Locate the audience selector and read the selected audience.

  3. Choose the intended audience, such as friends or a custom option, if available.

  4. Review the rest of the post for identifying details, tags, or information you do not want the selected audience to see.

  5. Publish only after confirming the audience shown in the composer.

Audience settings are easy to overlook when sharing an older post, using a different device, or posting through a feature with its own controls. If the available audience choices are not clear, pause and check Facebook’s on-screen explanation before sharing.

Change the audience after posting

If you notice that a video post has the wrong audience, open the post’s menu and look for an option to edit its audience or privacy. The wording and location can differ by device and post type. If Facebook offers the option, select the intended audience and confirm the change. Then revisit the post to check that the updated setting appears.

Not every kind of video or post offers the same editing controls. If you cannot change the audience, you may be able to remove the post and share it again with the correct setting. Consider whether removing it will affect comments or other context you want to keep. Deleting a post also does not guarantee that nobody previously saw, copied, or shared its contents.

What audience settings do—and do not—control

An audience setting determines who Facebook allows to access a particular post under that setting. It is not a promise that the video will remain within a specific social circle. Someone who can view a post may be able to discuss it, show it to another person, or capture its contents. A viewer may also have access through a group or Page rather than through your personal profile.

Sharing a link does not necessarily make restricted content available to everyone who receives it. People who lack permission may be unable to view the post, while people already included in its audience may still be able to access it. Avoid treating a link as a substitute for checking the original post’s audience.

Tags and mentions can affect who is notified or how a post appears to others, but they are not a replacement for the audience selector. Likewise, changing a general profile privacy setting may not automatically alter the audience of every video you have already published. Review the specific post when its visibility matters.

Review older videos and default settings

If you are concerned about existing videos, visit your profile and review the audience shown on individual posts. Facebook may provide privacy or activity tools that help you find and manage past posts, but their availability and names can vary. Check each relevant video rather than assuming that a new default setting has changed older posts.

You can also review the privacy settings for future posts and choose a default audience that suits your usual sharing habits. A default is a starting point, not a reason to skip checking the selector each time. You may want a different audience for a family video, a public announcement, or a post shared in a group.

A quick privacy check before sharing

Ask yourself three questions: Where am I posting this video? Which audience is selected for this specific post? Would I be comfortable with a viewer sharing or recording what they can see? These checks help prevent accidental oversharing without suggesting that any platform setting can control every later use of a video.

If a video includes someone else, consider their privacy and get permission when appropriate before posting. Choose the narrowest audience that fits your purpose, and revisit the post if you later decide it should be less visible. Facebook’s controls can help manage access, but thoughtful sharing remains an important part of protecting personal information.
